Evidence source and scope

Dennis R Louie, Janice J Eng. Berg Balance Scale score at admission can predict walking suitable for community ambulation at discharge from inpatient stroke rehabilitation. Journal of rehabilitation medicine. 2018. DOI 10.2340/16501977-2280

This note indexes a cited or audit-added source. It may be an original study, review, guideline, form or methods reference. Treat the specific design and the evidence below as authoritative; a source note is not automatically a primary study.

Scoped audit evidence

These are source- and component-level audit summaries as of 3 October 2026. Access and comparison scope can differ by report; none certifies every result or the underlying raw data.

Stroke

142 recruited, 123 followed at four weeks; 84 initially nonambulatory. Median admission day 19. Receptive aphasia and MMSE below 20 excluded. BBS ≥29 predicted speed ≥.8 m/s: AUC .88 (.81–.95), sensitivity .86, specificity .84. BBS ≥12 predicted unassisted five-metre walking: AUC .73 (.62–.84), sensitivity .74, specificity .68. Multivariable models adjusted for onset timing and treatment assignment; BBS/5 MWT analyzed separately because rho=.72. Table V confirms the report’s endpoint mapping. This was speed-defined capacity, not directly observed community participation.
